On June 26, 1977, Elvis Presley stepped onto the stage at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis before more than 18,000 fans, unaware that it would be his final concert. At just 42, his declining health had made touring increasingly difficult, yet his father, Vernon Presley, was there watching from the crowd—the same son he had seen grow from a poor boy in Tupelo into a global icon. Elvis sang “Hurt,” “Hound Dog,” and finally “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” never imagining it was goodbye. He expected to perform again on August 17. Instead, Elvis died at Graceland on August 16.
