It all began on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, when Gladys Presley gave birth to twin boys, Elvis Aaron and Jessie Garon. Jessie was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. His parents, Vernon and Gladys, raised him in a close-knit working-class family, where gospel music and church played an important role in his childhood.
In 1948, the Presley family moved to Memphis in search of better economic opportunities. There, Elvis absorbed gospel, country, blues, and rhythm and blues—musical influences that would eventually help shape the sound that made him famous. In March 1957, Elvis purchased the Memphis mansion for $102,500, creating a home that would become inseparable from both his public image and his family history. His parents and grandmother lived there, and the property remained central to the Presley story for generations.
In 1967, Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu. One year later, their only child, Lisa Marie Presley, was born on February 1, 1968. For Elvis, becoming a father added another deeply personal chapter to a life already surrounded by extraordinary fame.
But the Presley family story also carries profound sadness. Elvis died at Graceland on August 16, 1977, at just 42 years old. His death transformed Graceland into more than a home—it became a lasting symbol of his life and legacy.
After Elvis, the family continued carrying his legacy forward. Lisa Marie remained closely connected to the Presley estate, while later generations—including her daughters—became part of the continuing Presley family story. Today, Riley Keough serves as sole trustee for her and her sisters’ ownership interests connected to Graceland and Elvis’ personal effects.
